今回の単語は naive
なぜ、いちいちルー大柴のように synonyms と書くかと言うと、
synonyms の定義を辞書でしらべると、
同義語、類義語、同意語となっていて、
naive は gullible の 同義語なのか類義語なのか同意語なのか、
いまひとつ良く分からないからです。
この単語、日本人が誤用し易い単語としてはかなり有名な単語なので、
このブログでは取り上げる予定はなかったのですが、
せっかく出てきたのでちょっと辞書を引いてみましょう。

おそらく、日本でナイーブという単語が良いニュアンスの言葉だと
誤解されているのは、
ー〔子どものように〕純真な、天真らんまんな、あどけない
ー (of a person) natural and unaffected; innocent.
この辺りの定義に拠るものだと思われますね。
でも、英語話者にとっては、naive という単語は経験不足というニュアンスが強いので、
否定的な connotation * があるのだと思います。
* connotation ：〔文字どおりの意味に加えられる〕言外の意味、含蓄、含み、暗示［内包］的意味、含意)
ああ。またルー大柴になってしまった。
ルー大柴になったのは、この単語を日本語に訳すのが面倒くさかったからです。
そのうち、 connotationについての記事も書かないと。。。
さて、今回はNaive の例文を、Oxford 英英辞書（Online)で引いてみました。
前回の gullible の例文の特徴を念頭に置いて読んでみようと思います。

上記例文をざっと見た限り、「考えが甘い」という感じの、
否定的な connotation が感じられる文が殆どです。
‘Based on this rather naive childhood wish, I did a lot of research and finally got there.’
強いて言えば、上記の文では、「純真な、天真らんまんな、あどけない」
という意味合いで使われていると受取れない事はないですが、
rather という単語があるので、やっぱりちょっと、自虐的なニュアンスがありますね。
An aware, as opposed to naive, romanticism never did anyone any harm
そして、上記の文では、明らかに、aware の対義語としてnaive が出てきていますので、
「知識・経験不足」という意味合いがはっきりと取れます。
前回の記事で、gullible という単語は、public や society と
併用される事が多々あるようだと述べましたが、それに比べ、
naive という単語は、上記の例文を見た限り、
個々の人やモノをさして使用される事が多いようです。
‘Investing in art is ideal for naive investors since it is risk-free.’
一件例外がありました。
ここでのnaive は、「経験不足」という意味かと思われますが、
確かにこの文脈では、だまされやすい：gullible よりも
経験不足で考えが甘い：naive の方がしっくりくるような気もします。
まあ、人によって単語の選び方もさまざまでしょうから、
どれが正解という事はないと思います。
推敲の例にあるように、著者は、自分が伝えたい内容が
一番上手く伝わるような単語を最善を尽くして選んでるわけで、
どちらの単語が正解とか不正解とか、関係ないのです。
読み手としては、できるだけたくさんの文章を読んで、
単語の持つニュアンスについての感覚を研ぎ澄まし、
作者の意図した世界に近いものを、
受けとめられるようになりたいものです。
